PiS MEP Anna Zalewska today submitted a question to the European Commission regarding the future of EU climate policy following the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, which has set the tone for global climate policy since 2015.
“Our largest economic partner, and at the same time one of the largest emitters of CO2, is radically changing its approach to climate protection. This exposes the European Union to a number of adverse economic consequences, chief among them a further decline in the competitiveness of our industry,” the parliamentary question states.
In light of this, the PiS MEP asks whether—and if so, what—additional steps the European Commission plans to take following the U.S. decision to protect the competitiveness of the European economy and preserve jobs in the industrial sector across EU member states.
Zalewska asks whether the European Commission’s response will be to suspend the EU’s environmental protection regulations contained in the “Fit for 55” package.
Furthermore, the Polish politician wants to know whether the European Commission is considering backing away from the new 2040 climate target of a 90 percent greenhouse gas emissions, and how the European Commission plans to respond to President Donald Trump’s announcement of tariffs on products imported from the EU.
