During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, a debate was held on the outcomes of the Future Summit, which focused on transforming the global order to promote peace, advance human rights, and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. PiS MEP Arkadiusz Mularczyk spoke during the discussion.
Arkadiusz Mularczyk stated that the Pact for the Future addresses international peace and security, the protection of civilians, and the rule of law. He noted that it also promotes efforts to protect human rights, as well as cooperation with the International Court of Justice. The PiS MEP observed, however, that the Pact does not resolve all issues related to respect for human rights and the rule of law. The Polish politician emphasized that many countries responsible for war crimes continue to hide behind jurisdictional immunity and, as a result, cannot be brought before criminal courts to this day. “States and victims of armed conflicts often lack a legal forum where they could seek justice, obtain compensation, or achieve reconciliation,” he said. He also pointed out that victims of armed conflicts do not have the right to a court or to a fair trial, “and yet this is something that should be granted to everyone, especially victims of armed conflicts.”
The MEP encouraged Commissioner Věra Jourová to examine the Council of Europe resolution adopted this past June, which was initiated by British lawyer Lord Keen. He explained that this resolution concerns the creation of a negotiation mechanism that allows states to discuss reconciliation and find an appropriate solution that will bring the conflict to a just conclusion. “We must especially remember the victims of World War II, who have yet to see justice done, as well as the victims of ongoing armed conflicts today, whose victims are crying out for justice,” argued the Polish politician.
