Today in Strasbourg, during the ongoing plenary session of the European Parliament, a discussion took place on the conclusions of the European Council meeting held on December 19, 2024. PiS MEP Beata Szydło spoke during the discussion.
The Polish politician noted that although only a month has passed since the last European Council meeting, “we are already in a completely different geopolitical reality.”
Beata Szydło emphasized that it is high time to learn from the mistakes made in previous years. “However, listening to President von der Leyen, I get the impression that despite her declaration that we must take into account, for example, the observations contained in Mario Draghi’s report, we must strengthen the competitiveness of the European economy, she is still pursuing the same course that, unfortunately, has led to this economy becoming less competitive and to Europe facing enormous problems and crises,” – stated the former head of the Polish government, pointing out that the problems began to emerge from the moment the “Green Deal was forced through.” The PiS MEP drew attention to the words of the European Commission president, who spoke about the need to “move away from fossil fuels and strengthen the energy sector.” “I completely agree. The only question is: Why did Germany simultaneously start up all its coal-fired power plants? Why do they want to buy new coal deposits, for example, in Poland?” Szydło asked.
The Polish politician also referred to the agreement with Mercosur—which is being pushed by the EU and was mentioned by von der Leyen—noting that today, European farmers will be striking in front of the European Parliament against this agreement, which harms their interests.
“As a former Polish prime minister, I hope that the Polish presidency will lead to Europe and the EU changing course and finally waking up,” she concluded.
