In Strasbourg, during a plenary session of the European Parliament, as part of a debate on the conclusions of the European Council meeting held on December 18–19, 2025, Beata Szydło, a Law and Justice MEP, sharply criticized the direction of the European Union’s economic and trade policies, pointing to the Green Deal and the agreement with Mercosur as decisions that threaten the EU’s competitiveness, security, and sovereignty.
“First, there was the Green Deal, which destroyed the European economy and rendered it uncompetitive. Companies are fleeing abroad in search of a lifeline for their businesses,” Beata Szydło emphasized.
The MEP noted that under pressure from German industry, particularly the automotive sector, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen signed the agreement with Mercosur, bypassing standard procedures and the European Parliament’s decision. According to Beata Szydło, the consequences of this decision will be exceptionally severe.
“The agreement with the Mercosur countries will not only cause European industry to lose its competitiveness, but will also destroy European agriculture,” she noted.
In her speech, the MEP also addressed the ongoing protests by farmers from across the European Union who had come to the European Parliament to draw attention to the threats to their livelihoods. “Farmers are making it clear that their future is at risk. They are warning against the consequences of an agreement that undermines the security and sovereignty of the European Union,” she said.
Beata Szydło pointed out that the common thread running through the EU’s misguided decisions is the dominance of one country’s interests at the expense of the common good of the entire Community. “Mercosur is a huge mistake, just like the Green Deal before it, and even earlier, Europe’s dependence on Russian gas,” she concluded.
The PiS MEP called for a change in the European Union’s policy direction, one based on the genuine protection of the European economy, agriculture, and the sovereignty of member states.
