The German government has once again extended border controls with Poland until mid-September 2026, despite a decline in the number of illegal migrants at the EU’s external borders and in violation of EU Schengen regulations. MEP Jadwiga Wiśniewska has submitted a parliamentary question to the European Commission on this matter, demanding a response and an explanation.
“This is terrible news for Polish citizens and businesses. The difficulties and stress will continue, and Germany treats the Schengen rules like toilet paper in its domestic policy,” says Wiśniewska.
The PiS MEP emphasizes that border controls are a temporary and last-resort measure, yet Germany has been applying them continuously since 2023, citing a vague “need to reorganize migration policy.” “This action is contrary to the EU Treaties, disproportionate, and discriminatory, and the number of illegal border crossings fell by 26 percent in 2025—security is just a pretext here, not a reason,” — adds Wiśniewska.
The Polish politician also criticizes the European Commission’s restraint. “When a government from the same political camp as President von der Leyen breaks the law, the EC limits itself to generalities and ‘monitoring the situation.’ This demonstrates a double standard,” she notes.
In light of this, Wiśniewska submitted a parliamentary question to the European Commission asking about the legality of Germany’s actions and the possibility of launching an infringement procedure under the Treaties. “Poland and the EU cannot allow Berlin’s self-serving actions to undermine the foundations of Schengen,” she concludes.
