Jadwiga Wiśniewska calls for the harmonization of EU regulations in the area of livestock health protection

Jadwiga Wiśniewska calls for the harmonization of EU regulations in the area of livestock health protection

A PiS Member of the European Parliament today submitted a question to the European Commission regarding the lack of consistency in EU regulations and policies on livestock health.

“I am concerned about the deteriorating health situation of farm animals. For example, in Poland, successive outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) are causing enormous losses for our farmers, sometimes forcing them to cull entire herds. At the same time, our farmers and agricultural producers are bound by over 400 different pieces of veterinary legislation. These are not always precisely worded; they are often inconsistent and, as a result, interpreted differently in various member states, the parliamentary question states.

As Wiśniewska notes, isolating animals is crucial for preventing and limiting the spread of zoonoses. “Will our farmers receive any alternative toolsand if so, what kindto mitigate health risks on their farms?” the MEP asked in this regard. In addition, the Polish politician wants to know whether the European Commission plans to provide additional short-term and long-term financial support, from funds outside the Common Agricultural Policy, for biosecurity measures.
