In Strasbourg, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, an exchange of views took place with Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, on the animal health situation in Europe in the context of preventing health crises in agriculture. PiS MEP Jadwiga Wiśniewska took part in the discussion.
Jadwiga Wiśniewska stated that she is observing with concern the deteriorating health situation of farm animals in the European Union. “In Poland, successive outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) are causing enormous losses for our farmers, sometimes forcing them to liquidate their entire herds,” she said. In light of this, the MEP asked whether the Commission is considering establishing a fund for farmers who have suffered such enormous losses that they were forced to shut down their farms. “Commissioner, these farmers and breeders do not need yet another set of ideological concepts, but rather simplified regulations, greater knowledge, and easier access to preventive measures,” said MEP Wiśniewska. The Polish politician pointed out that livestock farmers and agricultural producers are currently bound by more than 400 different pieces of veterinary legislation. “Unfortunately, their duties and scope of responsibility are not always clearly defined,” said Wiśniewska, pointing out that the regulations are often inconsistent and interpreted differently across Member States. “Is a review of the law being considered with a view to simplifying it?” she asked.
