During a plenary session of the European Parliament, a debate was held on the implementation of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) between the European Union and the United Kingdom. Speaking on behalf of the PiS delegation, MEP Jadwiga Wiśniewska emphasized that four years after Brexit, EU–UK cooperation still needs to be put in order — particularly in the areas of the economy, education, and security — and that the Union needs clear, fair, and reciprocal rules for partnership.
The MEP noted that this is a crucial moment to assess whether EU–UK relations are based on stable foundations and mutual respect. “We need simple and predictable rules for cooperation, yet businesses—especially those in agriculture, fisheries, transportation, and manufacturing—continue to face too many administrative barriers,” she noted. She also emphasized that the implementation of the TCA must not lead to a weakening of Member States’ competitiveness, and that European agriculture and industry require real protection against unfair competition.
In her speech, Wiśniewska also drew attention to the situation of young people and educational issues. “We cannot allow EU citizens to be treated worse than third-country nationals in terms of access to education, mobility, or social rights in the United Kingdom. Brexit must not be used as a pretext to discriminate against Europeans,” she emphasized, calling for equal and transparent rules for academic cooperation.
Security was also a key element of her remarks. The MEP noted that the United Kingdom remains a vital defense partner for Europe, and cooperation in this area should be further developed within the framework of NATO—the only real guarantor of the continent’s security. She noted, however, that the EU and the UK can cooperate effectively by building on existing, proven structures.
In conclusion, Wiśniewska addressed the review of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement scheduled for 2026. “We must speak clearly about the need for a partnership based on fair principles, mutual respect, and concern for the interests of our citizens—entrepreneurs, students, workers, and those serving in security forces. The agreement offers us this opportunity; let’s make the most of it,” she concluded.
