Joachim Brudziński on the European Parliament's blocking of plans to regulate the Oder River

Joachim Brudziński on the European Parliament's blocking of plans to regulate the Oder River

During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, a discussion took place on the water crisis and droughts in the EU resulting from the global climate crisis, as well as the need for a sustainable, resilient water strategy for Europe. PiS MEP Joachim Brudziński spoke during the debate.

“Why did you attack the previous Polish government so aggressively when it was carrying out measures related to water retention and river regulation in Poland? Why was the Law and Justice government attacked so brutally for its attempts to regulate the Oder River?” the Polish politician asked representatives of the parliamentary majority. As Brudziński noted, the Rhine, which flows through Strasbourg and forms the border between France and Germany, is fully regulated and navigable. “But the border section of the Oder cannot be regulated, the MEP noted. The Polish politician wondered if this was because the Oder would pose competition to German ports. “How telling it was in this Chamber that this issue united all German MEPs, regardless of whether they were from the Greens, Renew, the EPP, or even the ID, he commented. The MEP noted with dissatisfaction that today the European Commission’s policy boils down to the fact that in Europe, all rivers in France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands can be regulated and made navigable, but in Poland, they cannot. “We will never agree to Poland becoming a museum of Europe,” Brudziński concluded.
