In Strasbourg, during a plenary session of the European Parliament, a discussion was held on the Commission’s report on Georgia for 2023 and 2024. PiS MEP Małgorzata Gosiewska spoke on behalf of the ECR Group.
Małgorzata Gosiewska said that a dictatorship is taking hold in Georgia, and that the ruling pro-Russian party — “Georgian Dream” — is breaking the law and rapidly passing legislation that marginalizes the opposition, shuts down independent media by cutting off their funding, and silences civil society.
She spoke of the brutal treatment of Georgian protesters who oppose such policies and the arrests of eight opposition leaders in recent weeks. She noted that former President Mikheil Saakashvili remains unlawfully imprisoned.
At the same time, she emphasized, the Georgian authorities are deliberately pursuing a strategy of strengthening ties with Russia, Belarus, and Iran—that is, a plan to sever the country’s ties with Europe and Western values—against the will of the people.
"This is the true picture of Georgia, and we cannot remain passive in the face of it. I call for the immediate international isolation of the Georgian Dream authorities, for maintaining contact with President Zurabishvili as the last guarantee of a pro-European course, and for the imposition of individual sanctions—including travel bans and asset freezes," — the Polish politician appealed, also calling for the release of all political prisoners and the launch of a support fund for Georgian civil society.
“We must be prepared to take further steps—including suspending the visa-free regime or freezing candidate status,” she emphasized.
