In Strasbourg, during the ongoing plenary session of the European Parliament, there was a discussion on the need for EU support for a just transition and reconstruction in Syria. PiS MEP Mariusz Kamiński spoke during the discussion.
Mariusz Kamiński said that the Baath Party regime and the Assad family, supported by Moscow and Tehran for over 60 years, had maintained power in Syria through terror. “The fall of Bashar al-Assad paved the way for change, but at the same time left the country in a deep humanitarian and economic crisis,” — noted the PiS MEP, pointing out that “this is also a test for the international community, and above all for the new authorities—whether they will be able to unite the country after 14 years of civil war.”
The Polish politician said that the fall of the regime has given Syrians hope for a better future, as evidenced by the numerous voluntary returns of refugees. However, as Kamiński noted, the interim government, which has Islamist roots, must make a tremendous effort to gain the trust of both the international community and, above all, the Syrians themselves.
“Syria needs justice, not more brutal crimes against civilians,” the MEP emphasized, pointing out that the new authorities must guarantee the protection of ethnic and religious minorities, including Christians. “Syria cannot be a threat to its neighbors or a living hell for its own citizens. It cannot become a safe haven for terrorists planning attacks in Europe,” Kamiński noted.
The PiS MEP noted that “these must be the key conditions for the gradual and conditional lifting of sanctions.”
