Today in Strasbourg, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, a debate was held on the 2024 annual report on the Banking Union. PiS MEP Marlena Maląg spoke during the discussion.
“Today, we are once again living in turbulent times,” said Marlena Maląg, pointing to concerns about the stability of the dollar, global trade, and cryptocurrencies. “But here in Europe, we have our own, unspoken problem: rising government debt and banks’ excessive exposure to sovereign debt. It’s a ticking time bomb!” —argued the Polish politician, noting that this hinders investment and restores a “vicious cycle” between government budgets and the banking sector. The PiS MEP wondered how it was possible that a report intended to assess the state of the Banking Union completely ignores this issue.
“Don’t we want to hear the uncomfortable truth?” Maląg asked, adding: “If so, then let’s not say later that no one warned us. I am warning you today. In the name of responsibility—let’s not pretend that everything is fine.”
