During a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, PiS MEP Marlena Maląg spoke during a debate on the enforcement of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), pointing out significant discrepancies between the regulation’s objectives and its practical application.
In her remarks, she emphasized that while the Act’s underlying principle—protecting the free market—is sound, its implementation raises serious concerns. As she noted, instead of effectively combating monopolies, we are increasingly seeing politically motivated actions targeting specific entities and the U.S. administration.
The MEP noted that regulations are beginning to serve as a tool for exerting pressure, which contradicts the European Union’s stated values. As she noted, “we talk about the free market, yet we use the law as a tool of pressure,” which she described as hypocrisy.
Her speech also included criticism of excessive regulation and the direction of EU policies, which stifle innovation rather than supporting it. Maląg emphasized that not only is Europe failing to create competitive alternatives to global tech giants, but it is also trying to compensate for its own lag by slowing others down.
“Europe has lost the technology race. Today, instead of running faster, it is trying to slow others down,” she noted, pointing to the need for a change in approach.
In conclusion, Marlena Maląg emphasized that true technological and economic autonomy does not stem from restrictions and penalties, but from courage, investment, and economic freedom. She warned that without a change of course, the European Union could find itself in a situation where it would merely regulate a future that it is unable to create on its own.
