Today in Strasbourg, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, a debate took place on the unlawful detention of Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war, as well as the ongoing bombings carried out by Russia. MEP Michał Dworczyk spoke on behalf of the ECR Group.
Michał Dworczyk said that the Russians’ treatment of prisoners of war and civilians “undoubtedly stems from the Soviet tradition and entails violence, torture, and death.” He recalled that Poles have repeatedly experienced this barbarism—as, for example, in 1940, when more than 22,000 Polish officers were executed on Stalin’s orders.
“Today, these criminal activities continue,” said the PiS MEP, pointing to numerous reports coming out of Ukraine regarding inhumane treatment and murders of prisoners of war and detainees. “This is not only a violation of all international norms, but above all a flagrant violation of fundamental human rights. Such acts are a disgrace to humanity and cannot go unpunished,” he emphasized.
According to Dworczyk, although the ongoing prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine “is a step in the right direction,” the European Parliament must exert pressure on Russia to agree to an “all-for-all” prisoner exchange.
“Given the gravity of this issue, we in the ECR Group ask for your support for our proposal that the Parliament adopt an appropriate resolution on this matter during the next plenary session,” the PiS politician appealed.
