In Strasbourg, during a plenary session of the European Parliament, as part of a series of speeches on important political issues, PiS MEP Michał Dworczyk took the floor and emphasized the need to adjust the EU’s priorities in the areas of security and defense.
The PiS politician noted that in recent weeks, the European Commission has presented a number of initiatives in the field of security and defense: the White Paper, the ReArm Europe program, the SAFE Regulation, and, earlier, the European Defense Industry Program (EDIP). “After reading these documents, it is clear that the Commission is placing joint procurement and a mandatory European component at the center of its proposals,” Dworczyk noted. The MEP emphasized that “both of these issues are, of course, important in the long term, but today we are not living in an abstract future, but in a real and dangerous ‘here and now.’”
Therefore, according to the Polish politician, the priorities for support should be different. “First, direct involvement in protecting the eastern border of NATO and the European Union. Second, the level of defense spending relative to GDP. And third, tangible assistance provided to Ukraine in its fight, both military and logistical,” Michał Dworczyk noted, emphasizing that these are “fundamental and obvious criteria.”
Meanwhile, he said, the priorities set by the Commission, rather than strengthening Europe’s security, in practice translate into benefits for large defense contractors, as evidenced by the record stock market performance of some of them. “That is why I urge both the Commission and Members of Parliament to make the necessary adjustments to their priorities while working on the EDIP and future projects,” he appealed.
