During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, in a debate on the work program of the Cypriot presidency, ECR Co-Chair and PiS MEP Patryk Jaki expressed support for the announcements regarding migration, security, and the sovereignty of member states, while warning that achieving ambitious economic goals is not possible without moving away from Green Deal measures that undermine the European Union’s competitiveness.
The MEP congratulated the Cypriot Presidency on its ambitious and interesting program, highlighting in particular the announcements regarding migration, security, and foreign policy. “The statements on migration are particularly welcome. We truly need a return directive,” noted Patryk Jaki. He also expressed satisfaction with the announcements of a hard line toward Russia and efforts to expand the European Union.
In his speech, the MEP highlighted the importance of member states’ sovereignty and the role of industry in building the competitiveness of the European economy. “The statements regarding industry, competitiveness, and the fight against regulatory hyperinflation were very good. These are issues that deserve support, and you can count on our help in this regard,” he emphasized.
At the same time, Patryk Jaki warned against excessive naivety in EU policy, pointing to the contradictions between ambitious economic goals and the requirements of the Green Deal. “It is impossible to reconcile competitiveness, industrial development, and lowering the cost of living for Europeans with the requirements of the Green Deal, which weakens the European Union and leaves us unable to cope with key challenges,” he assessed.
The MEP also highlighted the importance of the future EU budget, calling for the protection of spending on agriculture and cohesion policy. “It is important not to push the Union toward cutting spending on agriculture and cohesion policy,” he noted.
In closing, Patryk Jaki emphasized solidarity with Cyprus and the country’s importance to Europe. “We will not forget your problems. Cyprus is very important to us—it is a country with a wonderful history. We are here to help you, and we’re rooting for you,” the MEP concluded.
