Today in Brussels, during a mini-plenary session of the European Parliament, a debate titled “Choose Europe for Science” is taking place. Piotr Müller, a PiS MEP, spoke during the discussion, calling for the rational use of EU funds for scientific purposes.
“A global technology race is unfolding before our very eyes—in the fields of artificial intelligence, energy, biotechnology, and advanced information technologies,” said the PiS politician, adding that if the European Union wants to be a major player in this race—especially in the context of competition with the United States and China—it must focus its efforts and resources precisely on these key areas.
As he noted, the financial resources of the EU and its member states are limited. “That is why we must make bold and responsible decisions,” Müller urged, pointing out that if the EU truly wants to be competitive, it must concentrate funding where it will yield real, measurable results for citizens and the economy.
In this context, he stated that spending taxpayers’ money on ideologically motivated research—research that brings no added value to the advancement of science and technology—is a “waste.” "Funding pseudoscientific projects investigating whether there are 30 or perhaps 35 genders is not an investment in Europe’s future. It diverts attention and resources away from the challenges that will truly determine our position in the world,” the Polish MEP believes.
At the same time, he emphasized that this is not an attack on the freedom of scientific research, since anyone can conduct whatever research they wish—privately, using their own funds. “But what we finance with public money must be the subject of a rational choice,” said Piotr Müller, stressing that taxpayers have the right to expect that their money will be invested in development—in science “that provides answers to the challenges facing civilization, rather than in ideological experiments.”
“It’s time for a serious debate and serious decisions,” the PiS politician urged.
