PiS MEPs during the CAP debate: "You are the gravediggers of European agriculture"

PiS MEPs during the CAP debate: "You are the gravediggers of European agriculture"

Today in Strasbourg, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, a debate took place on the Common Agricultural Policy after 2027. During the discussion, which included EU Agriculture Commissioner Christoph Hansen, PiS MEPs Waldemar Buda and Jacek Ozdoba spoke.

Waldemar Buda noted that many voices expressing doubts and concerns were heard during the debate. “And today it turns out that you, as commissioner, may be the one to push through what the previous commissioner blocked—namely, curtailing the Common Agricultural Policy, reaching an agreement with Mercosur, or liberalizing trade with Ukraine. Do you want to go down in history as the commissioner who agreed to this?” the PiS politician asked Hansen. Buda urged MEPs to firmly express their opposition, thereby compelling the European Commission to take concrete action. As he noted, very important decisions on this matter will be made in the near future. “If you are against this, withhold your support for Ursula von der Leyen’s European Commission. Let the EC get to work; let this be a warning signal for them, Waldemar Buda urged.

The PiS MEP asked the Luxembourg politician whether he realized that importing food from all over the world is not a solution for Europe. “It may be cheap today, but in a moment there may simply be a shortage of this food. It simply might not make it to Europe because some conflict will lead to that,” Buda stated, asking whether wars and the COVID-19 pandemic “have taught us nothing.” “And today we want to trade with Brazil? Ladies and gentlemen, that is no solution at all,” he said.

The MEP said that the European Commission and Ursula von der Leyen should be given a yellow card today. “The world has changed, and the European Union should change as well, he emphasized.

Jacek Ozdoba addressed Commissioner Hansen, saying, “You will be the gravedigger of European agriculture.” “Hands off Polish farmers, hands off all farmers in the European Union, the PiS politician appealed, adding: “Your Mercosur plan will lead to people simply hauling you away on wheelbarrows.” He stated that the best solution would be to establish an investigative committee to address the issue of “killing European agriculture in the name of some business.”

The PiS politician urged MEPs—if they oppose the agreement with Mercosur, the Green Deal, the migration crisis, the crisis in relations with the U.S., and want a Europe that prioritizes the national interests of its member states—vote in favor of her dismissal.
