During a debate in the European Parliament titled “The Changing Security Landscape and the Role of the Police as a Key Pillar of the EU’s Internal Security Strategy,” PiS MEPs Joachim Brudziński and Maciej Wąsik took the floor. Both emphasized the need to strengthen the role of national law enforcement agencies and the sovereignty of member states in the areas of public order and border protection.
Joachim Brudziński pointed out that the proposed EU strategy pays too little attention to the integration and support of local and national police forces, which operate on the front lines. “The strategy we are discussing here focuses on the EU level and cooperation between countries, but less attention is paid to the integration and support of local and national police forces, which are often on the front lines,” said the MEP. He added that member states should have full autonomy in the operation of their police forces.
As a former Polish Minister of the Interior, Brudziński emphasized his pride in working with the professional Polish police and called for “more common sense and more trust in the Polish police.” In his speech, he criticized practices which, in his view, — undermine the capabilities of law enforcement agencies, and opposed treating police officers as subjects of political or symbolic actions rather than focusing on fighting crime.
In his speech, Maciej Wąsik focused on the threats posed by mass and uncontrolled migration. “Mass migration leads to a massive increase in crime. False asylum seekers flooding into Europe en masse pose a threat to our citizens, families, and children,” stated MEP Wąsik. He called for the resolute protection of borders and the return of individuals who do not meet the criteria for legal residence to their countries of origin.
Wąsik emphasized that the Migration Pact is not a solution to illegal migration and called for the adoption of a policy modeled on Poland’s approach. He noted that Poland is firmly defending its border despite pressure from left-wing circles, is building a barrier on the border with Belarus despite opposition from Ursula von der Leyen, and is also turning back illegal migrants at the border to countries where their stay is legal, contrary to the position of some EU officials and agencies. Wąsik also emphasized that Poland firmly rejects the Migration Pact, contrary to the European Commission’s stance.
In his speech, Wąsik criticized narratives portraying undocumented migrants as “people seeking love or refuge,” calling them “false” and arguing that mass migration has increased crime and led to significant social changes in some EU countries.
Both MEPs emphasized that EU security policy should respect the competences of member states and focus on practical solutions that strengthen police forces and border controls in order to protect citizens.
