In Strasbourg, as part of debates on violations of human rights, democratic principles, and the rule of law, a discussion was held on the escalating and systematic repression of women in Iran. Adam Bielan, a PiS MEP and coordinator of the ECR Group in the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) as well as co-author of the resolution on this matter, spoke during the discussion.
“The human rights situation in Iran is deteriorating more and more,” noted the PiS MEP. He said that the mandatory hijab law, backed by severe penalties, is just one aspect of the oppression. “In every aspect of life—marriage, divorce, child custody, and public life—women face systemic discrimination,” Bielan emphasized, noting that the regime uses its interpretation of Islamic law as a weapon to restrict women’s autonomy by criminalizing their disobedience.
“In prisons, women and girls are systematically subjected to sexual assault and rape, and the methods of torture used there reflect the regime’s complete disregard for human dignity and human rights,” he further pointed out.
The Polish politician emphasized that the international community cannot remain passive. “Today we commend the resilience of Iranian women and stand with them in their fight for justice,” Bielan added.
As a co-author of the resolution, the AFET coordinator commended the European Union’s recent expansion of sanctions against Iran for its military support of Russia and called for the expansion of sanctions under the EU’s global sanctions regime for human rights violations against all those responsible forhuman rights violations in Iran.
