Today in Strasbourg, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, a debate took place with the European Commission and the Council titled "A Unified EU Response to Unjustified U.S. Trade Measures and Global Trade Opportunities for the EU" in the context of the U.S. government’s recent decision to raise existing tariffs and impose new ones. Speaking on behalf of the ECR Group, PiS MEP Adam Bielan addressed the discussion.
Adam Bielan began by thanking Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for making the strategic decision to visit Washington at a critical moment for our transatlantic relations. “While others opt for ambiguity, she takes action—because true leadership is the ability to show up on time,” — noted the PiS MEP, adding that, unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who continues to block President Duda’s initiative to organize the long-awaited EU-U.S. summit in Warsaw as part of Poland’s presidency of the Council. “This is a missed opportunity—both symbolically and politically,” Bielan argued, pointing out that canceling the summit sends the wrong signal to the EU’s most important ally. “Especially as global tensions rise and our need for unity grows,” he added.
The Polish MEP agreed that we may have differences with the United States—on issues such as trade, subsidies, or regulatory differences. But, as he noted, the response to these should not be retaliation, but rather pragmatic engagement. “We need a common, strategic European response that both protects our interests and strengthens our partnership,” emphasized the PiS politician.
