Jadwiga Wiśniewska on EU-United Kingdom relations: “We need cooperation based on trust and concrete solutions”

A debate on preparations for the EU–United Kingdom summit took place in Strasbourg during the European Parliament’s plenary session. PiS MEP Jadwiga Wiśniewska spoke during the discussion.

Jadwiga Wiśniewska emphasized that the upcoming EU–United Kingdom summit—the first since Brexit—"is an opportunity to open a new chapter in rebuilding and deepening our relations."  In the MEP’s view, the most important issues that must be addressed are, above all, cooperation in the field of defense, since, as she noted, a European defense policy is not possible without the United Kingdom. “In the face of global threats, we need a joint response to hybrid challenges, cybersecurity, and the protection of our borders,” Wiśniewska emphasized.

Among other key issues, she mentioned the youth mobility program, trade matters, and the fight against illegal migration.

Wiśniewska noted that one of the most troubling consequences of Brexit for young people was the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the Erasmus+ program. In this context, she praised plans for new initiatives regarding youth mobility.

“Brexit has changed the formal framework of our relations, but it has not severed our ties. We must do everything we can to make everyday life easier for Europeans—we cannot allow political or bureaucratic obstacles to hinder them. We need cooperation based on trust and concrete solutions—cooperation that addresses the needs of people on both sides of the English Channel,” argued the PiS MEP.
