On the third day of the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, a debate was held on preparations for this year’s final European Council summit, which will take place on December 19–20, 2024. Adam Bielan, chair of the Polish delegation in the ECR Group, took part in the discussion.
Adam Bielan addressed one of the main topics of the European Council summit in Brussels, namely the current situation in Syria. He noted that the collapse of al-Assad’s bloody dictatorship poses many threats. He highlighted, in particular, threats to the rights of minorities, including religious minorities, and above all, the rights of Christians. “Christians are the most persecuted religious minority in the world, and the European Union is the only community that can stand up for them,” he remarked. “We must do everything we can to ensure that Christians do not suffer amid the chaos currently reigning in Syria,” he urged EU politicians.
The Polish politician also drew attention to the threats posed by the new wave of migration. He recalled that over the past 10 years, nearly 5 million Syrians have arrived in European Union countries. “This is a very good moment to halt the migration pact, which is very detrimental to the European Union,” he stated, arguing that the EU must do everything in its power to prevent a new wave of migration. He also recalled a statement by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who said more than a year ago during a Sejm debate that he would not be “outmaneuvered” within the European Union. The MEP pointed out that Tusk was “outmaneuvered” on the migration pact just two days later and emphasized that this pact was a mistake from which the European Union should withdraw as soon as possible.
Adam Bielan also noted that the first European Council summit in 2025, when Poland will assume the six-month rotating presidency, will likely focus on a trade agreement with Mercosur. “I hope this won’t be yet another issue in which the Polish prime minister gets ‘outmaneuvered,’ given that this agreement poses a huge threat to European agriculture,” said the Member of the European Parliament.
