On the third day of the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, a debate took place on combating the abuse of subcontracting and labor brokers. PiS MEP Marlena Maląg participated in the discussion.
Marlena Maląg stated that work should provide a sense of dignity, stability, and security, yet migrant workers often fall victim to unscrupulous employment agencies and abuses in the subcontracting sector. She noted that, due to a lack of awareness of their rights and the relevant regulations, they are vulnerable to lower wages, illegal working conditions, a lack of social security, and exorbitant transportation and lodging costs.
The Polish politician explained that subcontracting is often used as a business strategy aimed at reducing costs and avoiding employer liability, for example through chains of subcontractors. She pointed out that subcontractors frequently disappear without paying workers the wages they are owed.
“We do not consent to this! We have a moral obligation to initiate and implement systemic solutions that will safeguard workers’ rights. All of this is aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of the economies of European Union member states,” Marlena Maląg appealed to representatives of EU institutions and the governments of member states.
