At Wednesday’s session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, MEPs voted to approve the composition of the new European Commission. During the debate preceding the vote, which was attended by Ursula von der Leyen—who was re-elected as President of the European Commission—PiS MEP Adam Bielan spoke, presenting the position of the PiS delegation within the ECR on this matter.
Adam Bielan stated that “it was fitting that the most frequently used word in Ursula von der Leyen’s speech was ‘competitiveness.’” He noted that in recent years, the European Union—including under her leadership—has lost this competitiveness to its global rivals. In this context, the MEP referred to Mario Draghi’s report, which was also presented by the Commission President. “The report states that one of the main reasons for this loss of competitiveness is the fact that retail electricity prices, especially for industrial sectors, are currently two to three times higher than in the U.S. and China,” —the Polish politician said, emphasizing that energy prices in the EU are among the highest in the world. He cited the “crazy Green Deal plan” as the main reason for this. The MEP criticized the European Commission for its unwavering support of these measures, suggesting that their goal is to maintain political support from the Green faction. Adam Bielan warned that, as a result, the EU is likely to continue the same policy in the coming years, exacerbating existing problems.
Adam Bielan pointed out that in the last European Parliament elections, voters clearly called for a change in this policy. “Unfortunately, in your speech today, you proved that you are deaf to the voice of the citizens,” he commented. “None of us disputes that environmental protection measures are necessary, but the only effect of the current climate policy experienced by European Union citizens is more expensive energy, more expensive cars, and higher prices for heating and food,” —the MEP commented.
He noted that Ursula von der Leyen’s speech also made no mention of withdrawing from the dangerous and harmful migration pact. “Instead, for months we’ve been hearing about attempts to introduce a trade agreement with Mercosur, which will deal a brutal blow to European agriculture,” added the Member of the European Parliament.
“Although the current European Commission includes many competent candidates, such as Mr. Fitto, Ms. Kallas, and Mr. Kubilius, there is no indication that this flawed and harmful policy of the European Commission as a whole will undergo any change,” —stated the MEP. “We cannot agree to this. That is why the Law and Justice delegation in the European Parliament will vote against this Commission today,” said the chair of the Polish delegation in the ECR Group, outlining the delegation’s position.
