During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, as part of the debates on violations of human rights, democratic principles, and the rule of law, a discussion took place regarding the lack of information about Mikolai Statkevich, who was convicted by the Belarusian regime, as well as recent attacks on family members of Belarusian politicians and activists. PiS MEP Anna Fotyga, co-author of the resolution on this topic adopted today by the European Parliament, spoke during the discussion.
“‘The troublemakers must be restrained’—Jaruzelski declared on December 13 when he imposed martial law in Poland,” Anna Fotyga recalled, referring to the speech by the Polish People’s Republic general on the anniversary commemorating the victims of martial law. As she noted, 42 years later, the same methods are being used against innocent people by the usurper Lukashenko. “Where is Mikołaj Statkiewicz, and where are all the other opposition activists?” asked Anna Fotyga, voicing the European Parliament’s solidarity with the victims of the Belarusian regime. “All political prisoners should be released immediately,” appealed the former head of Polish diplomacy and co-author of the resolution, in which the Parliament also stands up for Andrzej Poczobut, Ales Bialacki, Paweł Siewiarynec, Palina Szarenda-Panasiuk, and many other innocent victims of Lukashenko’s regime. “We must do everything in our power to achieve this goal and to help their families, including the very ill wife of Mikołaj Statkiewicz. We must show solidarity,” urged Anna Fotyga.
