Anna Fotyga on the Maduro regime's actions

Anna Fotyga on the Maduro regime's actions

During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, a debate took place on the situation in Venezuela. PiS MEP Anna Fotyga spoke during the debate.

Anna Fotyga stated that Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro is completely failing his own country and people and—following in the footsteps of Vladimir Putin—is intimidating and using violence against the political opposition that opposes his regime. “Recently, Maduro has also launched unilateral hostile actions against neighboring Guyana, threatening to actually annex the oil- and gas-rich Essequibo province into Venezuela, said the former head of Polish diplomacy. “The European Union must take more decisive steps to prevent the Maduro regime from engaging in such actions,” the MEP urged.

On December 3 of this year, a referendum was held in Venezuela, organized by the Nicolás Maduro regime, on taking control of the oil-rich region of Guyana, which accounts for two-thirds of the country’s territory. As a result, the referendum raised serious concerns not only in Guyana but throughout South America. Guyana has asked the International Court of Justice to confirm the validity of the 1899 ruling regarding the border between Guyana and Venezuela.
