Anna Fotyga on the Situation in Georgia

Anna Fotyga on the Situation in Georgia

In Strasbourg, during the European Parliament’s final plenary session of this term, a debate was held titled “Attempts to Reintroduce the Foreign Agents Act in Georgia and the Resulting Restrictions on Civil Society.” PiS MEP Anna Fotyga, co-author of the resolution adopted by Parliament, took part in the discussion.

Anna Fotyga said: “When we granted Georgia candidate status, we in the European Parliament recognized the will of the Georgian people.” She noted, however, that the will of the Georgian people had been seriously violated by the reintroduction of the so-called Foreign Agents Act. Referring to far-reaching proposals to suspend Georgia’s candidate status, the MEP stated that society should not be punished, but rather that targeted sanctions against those responsible for the repression should be considered. The former head of Polish diplomacy argued that such sanctions should be applied to the Kremlin-linked oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili. She also called for the release of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. The European Parliament today adopted Anna Fotyga’s amendments to the resolution, calling for Saakashvili’s release and the imposition of individual sanctions on the leader of Georgian Dream, Bidzina Ivanishvili. At the invitation of Anna Fotyga, the mother of the Georgian leader, Giuli Alasania, also spoke about the situation of the imprisoned former President Saakashvili.
