PiS MEP Anna Zalewska submitted a question today to the European Commission regarding the protests by European farmers against the proposals contained in the European Green Deal.
Zalewska noted that protests by farmers have been taking place on the streets of European capitals for several weeks now, with the farmers clearly and comprehensibly presenting their demands and rightly directing their anger toward the European Commission and the European Parliament. “The key to solving the problems of European agriculture lies in the hands of the EU authorities!” she emphasized. As she stated, it would take very little—namely, to abandon the absurd ideas contained in the European Green Deal and give farmers the freedom to produce. “By now, I think everyone realizes that the course set by the EU majority—ambitious and ill-conceived changes to the EU’s agri-climate policy—has no chance of success,” she said.
Anna Zalewska recalled that, as a Member of the European Parliament working on the European Green Deal, the “FitFor55” package, and the Climate Law, she had sounded the alarm from the very beginning about the dangers posed by the ideas proposed by the European Commission and thoughtlessly voted through in the European Parliament. “I’ve stood with farmers since I began working in the European Parliament, and I still do today. I meet with them, I attend their protests, and I support them in their just fight for freedom,” said the Polish MEP, addressing the European Commission with questions she had heard during one of the recent protests in Lower Silesia. Above all, Zalewska wanted to know what steps the European Commission plans to take to meet the expectations of the protesting farmers and whether it plans to revise the provisions of the European Green Deal, particularly those that directly impact agriculture. In addition, the PiS MEP asked why the European Commission is allowing Russian grain to flood the European market (as she noted, in 2023, grain imports from Russia to the EU amounted to 1.4 million metric tons) and whether it plans to provide additional support to Polish farmers in light of the influx of agricultural products from Ukraine, which is beyond the Polish government’s control.
