During the ongoing plenary session at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, a debate was held on simplifying and strengthening the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). PiS MEP Anna Zalewska spoke on behalf of the ECR Group.
Anna Zalewska stated that strengthening and improving the CBAM system is a step in the right direction. “For the first time, the Commission has so clearly listened to the member states that are implementing CBAM,” she said. At the same time, citing the Draghi report, she noted that the current regulatory changes are insufficient, as simply exempting small businesses will not save European industry.
“It’s time to take the next step and introduce solutions that will actually lower energy production costs in Europe,” she urged, calling for urgent and concrete changes to the EU ETS Directive, which has the greatest impact on rising production costs in energy-intensive industries.
“We need concrete solutions to support European industry, including a return to free allowances,” the MEP argued. She also noted that European industry, which exports its products outside the EU to countries with significantly less restrictive climate policies, is in an increasingly difficult situation, losing its competitive position in the global market. “We’re doing well, but not enough. It’s time to take the next steps,” the Polish politician concluded.
