Beata Mazurek: “Animal welfare initiatives require dialogue with farmers”

During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, a debate was held titled “The Promised Review of EU Animal Welfare Legislation and Related European Citizens’ Initiatives.” On behalf of the ECR Group, PiS MEP Beata Mazurek submitted a question to the European Commission.

Beata Mazurek stated that this debate unfortunately confirms that some Members of the European Parliament do not understand the gravity of the current situation in the agricultural sector. She recalled that for several weeks now, massive protests by farmers have been taking place on the streets of European cities against yet another set of unrealistic environmental and animal welfare requirements being imposed on them.

The MEP called on the European Commission to follow through on its promises to refrain from imposing additional burdens on farmers. “Any further proposals regarding animal welfare require the preparation of more assessments and dialogue with the agricultural community across the entire EU, not just with selectively chosen non-governmental organizations, she emphasized. She added that only through dialogue can the changes proposed by the EU be made acceptable to farmers.
