Today in Brussels, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, in a debate titled “Energy Security, Energy Independence, and Energy Supplies in a Geopolitical Context: Ensuring Market Stability and Affordable Energy for Industry and Citizens,” MEP Beata Szydło took the floor, offering a critical assessment of the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS).
In her speech, she emphasized that the European Union’s current climate policy is having a negative impact on the economy and the social situation in member states. “The ETS has destroyed the European economy. More and more companies are going bankrupt, people are losing their jobs, and production is being moved outside the European Union. This is happening at a time when the ETS has been in place for a long time, and yet proposals are being made to expand it further,” the MEP noted.
Beata Szydło also drew attention to the rising cost of living for citizens, including energy and heating prices.
“Soon, people won’t be able to pay their electricity and heating bills. The discussion about introducing the so-called ETS 2 is a dead end. This system cannot be fixed or improved,” she emphasized.
Referring to the current geopolitical situation and energy challenges, the MEP pointed to the need to change course. “If we are talking today about another crisis, also triggered by the global situation, we must prepare for it and adequately protect our citizens and the economy. The measures taken so far are leading us straight into a wall,” she said.
At the conclusion of her speech, Beata Szydło called for a complete departure from the ETS system. “The ETS simply must be abolished,” she concluded.
