During a debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on the European Commission’s Work Program for 2026, PiS MEP Beata Szydło spoke. The former Polish prime minister expressed her concern regarding the vision presented by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Referring to President von der Leyen’s remarks, Beata Szydło stated that, unfortunately, they do not paint a picture that would solve the European Union’s real problems or guarantee its competitiveness, security, and development.
The PiS MEP pointed out that in recent years, talk of an attractive vision for the EU’s development has not been reflected in reality. “Today we’re talking about a Europe that should be competitive, but it is precisely the European Commission’s policies and the decisions made in the European Parliament that have led to a serious crisis in European industry. Steel mills are disappearing, and the automotive industry is vanishing. We won’t win the competition on the global market with small electric cars. The world is leaving us behind,” she stated.
Beata Szydło also drew attention to high energy prices, which she believes are a consequence of the Green Deal policy, and to the difficult situation faced by farmers, who must contend with the effects of, among other things, the agreement with the Mercosur countries. “Decisions made at the EU level directly translate into the challenges Europeans face every day,” she noted.
The Polish politician also highlighted concerns regarding further restrictions on the sovereignty of EU member states. “The desire to subjugate member states and strip them of their powers is a path that leads not to unity, but to division,” she emphasized.
At the conclusion of her speech, Beata Szydło emphasized that Europe should be a community that respects the sovereignty of its member states and fosters solidarity and development. “Unfortunately, the program presented by the President does not guarantee that the European Union will be the one we all desire,” she concluded.
