Yesterday, during a debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on the new legal framework for products, tailored to a sustainable digital transition, PiS MEP Piotr Müller drew attention to the risks associated with imposing excessive administrative burdens on companies under the pretext of digitization.
“Digitization is, of course, generally a step in the right direction when it simplifies regulations and reduces overregulation. The problem arises when it becomes merely a digital means of imposing yet more obligations,” Müller said.
The former government spokesperson was critical of planned regulations concerning, among other things, digital reporting of environmental footprints. In his view, rather than reducing bureaucracy, the new regulations merely shift obligations to a digital format without eliminating them.
“This is not a good solution, especially when it increases the burden on European companies. The Green Deal, higher energy prices, and growing regulations are leading to a decline in the competitiveness of our companies,” he noted.
In his speech, the PiS MEP pointed out that the weakening position of European companies is caused not only by external factors but, above all, by internal EU regulations that increase production costs. He cited the steel sector as an example.
“Instead of focusing solely on restricting steel imports from outside the European Union, we should strive to lower the costs of steel production on our continent,” he emphasized.
MEP Müller called on EU institutions to make decisions that genuinely support economic development and competitiveness, rather than merely paying lip service to the narratives of digitalization and sustainable development.
