Today in Strasbourg, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, a debate was held on preparations for the upcoming European Council meeting, which will take place on December 14–15, 2023, in Brussels. PiS MEP Beata Szydło spoke during the discussion.
Beata Szydło drew attention to the issue of amending the treaties and attempts to limit member states’ veto power, stating that this is a very bad idea, amounting to a de facto restriction of member states’ sovereignty. “However, the vote at the previous Council meeting clearly showed that there is no majority in favor of introducing such changes,” she noted. As she stated, there is no doubt that we must seek agreement, compromise, and solutions to problems in the spirit of consensus, looking for solutions that are acceptable and take into account the rights and capabilities of individual member states.
“Undoubtedly, the most important issue for all of us right now is supporting Ukraine. This is very important, and there is probably no doubt that we should continue to do so,” emphasized the former head of the Polish government.
Speaking about EU finances, the MEP stated that before any reviews are conducted, further changes and new solutions are introduced, it is worth taking a closer look at the expenditures and policies currently being implemented in the European Union—policies that, rather than stimulating economic development and ensuring financial well-being for Europeans, are hindering that progress. She pointed to the ill-considered climate policy in this regard. The Polish politician, speaking about the necessary transition, noted that it must be carried out pragmatically and in a way that does not place an additional burden on Europeans. “We need to examine whether the programs currently being implemented ensure the European Union’s energy security, strengthen our competitiveness, and, above all, serve the interests of Europeans,” she urged.
