Today, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, a debate was held on the outcomes of the COP30 climate conference, which took place November 10–21 of this year in Belém, Brazil. Speaking on behalf of the Law and Justice delegation, MEPs Anna Zalewska and Tobiasz Bocheński criticized the direction of the EU’s climate policy and its consequences for citizens and the economy.
MEP Anna Zalewska emphasized that for many consecutive climate summits, clear signals have been coming to the EU that its climate policy is perceived globally as being completely out of touch with reality. “Surprised, shocked, disappointed—really? For several summits now, the whole world has been sending unambiguous signals that the European Union has gone mad, that by building an ideology around this, it’s making huge amounts of money, and that it’s a hypocrite,” Zalewska said.
She pointed out that the EU is setting unrealistic climate goals, such as a 90% reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2040, while it has still not achieved its 55% target for 2030. As she emphasized, the creation of new ETS systems results in Europeans bearing the costs of a policy that is impossible to implement.
Zalewska also drew attention to contradictions in the EU’s strategy, citing, among other things, the agreement with Mercosur and negotiations with Ukraine.
“You are becoming the world’s hypocrites. You say that since we cannot meet our targets, we must resort to everything that produces emissions in order to increase those emissions even further,” she emphasized.
She called for a change in the direction of climate policy: “We need to wake up. We need to build a better world for our children.”
Tobiasz Bocheński pointed out that it is EU regulations that are largely responsible for the rising cost of living, the economic difficulties faced by companies, and Europe’s declining competitiveness.
“Europeans, Poles, are you wondering why housing in Europe is so expensive? Why are prices in stores rising? Why are your companies struggling in global markets? The answer is in this chamber,” he said.
Bocheński emphasized that the EU is responsible for only 6 percent of global CO₂ emissions, while China accounts for 30 percent of global CO₂ emissions and 30 percent of global industrial production. Meanwhile, as he noted, Europe is weakening its own economy through costly climate regulations.
“Half of this room is gripped by an ideological view of reality. It is spending trillions of euros on goals that are neither economically beneficial nor cost-effective, and that make everyday life more difficult. This is the consequence of ideology rather than a pragmatic economic approach,” the PiS politician concluded.
