In Strasbourg, during a plenary session of the European Parliament, a debate took place regarding the recently revealed cases of spying on Members of the European Parliament and the failure to comply with the PEGA Committee’s recommendations. PiS MEP Dominik Tarczyński spoke during the discussion.
Tarczyński noted that the plenary chamber was nearly empty during the debate on spyware. “During this debate, which is being used to attack conservative governments, only six Members of the European Parliament are present. We’re spending taxpayers’ money on a debate that nobody cares about, except the left. So first and foremost, before you decide to hold these debates, ask yourselves: Is it worth spending taxpayers’ money on this?” he asked.
He also noted that there is no willingness to discuss spyware in general, and that the topic of, among other things, the German-made FinFisher software—which was sold to Morocco, where it was used to eavesdrop on the French president—is being overlooked.
"No one wants to talk about the problem of spyware in Europe, but you want to focus on Pegasus to attack the conservative government. So please, stop this ‘show,’ stop wasting taxpayers’ money; if you want to get rid of spyware, start with Germany,” the politician suggested.
Tarczyński pointed out that Sophia in 't Veld, the rapporteur for the PEGA committee’s report, had refused to allow the committee to travel to Germany to investigate FinFisher, which was far more powerful and aggressive than Pegasus and had been sold outside the EU. “Don’t be hypocrites and don’t waste taxpayers’ money,” he urged.
