The Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and the Committee on Development (DEVE) of the European Parliament have decided to include the joint nominees of the ECR and EPP Groups, Andrzej Poczobut from Belarus and Mzii Amaglobeli from Georgia, on the shortlist for the 2025 Sakharov Prize.
PiS MEP Małgorzata Gosiewska, who supported Poczobut’s nomination, said that this decision honors the courage of a journalist who, in the face of repression, continues to defend truth and freedom.
“Andrzej Poczobut symbolizes the struggle and determination of free people to speak the truth, even at the highest personal cost. His voice represents not only the Belarusian people, but also all those who refuse to live in fear or silence. This shortlist sends a strong signal that Europe remembers those who fight for freedom—not only their own, but ours as well,” Gosiewska emphasized.
The final winner of the 2025 Sakharov Prize will be selected by the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament on October 22 in Strasbourg during the EP’s plenary session.
