Elżbieta Rafalska on the Roma Community in Europe

During a mini-plenary session of the European Parliament in Brussels, the President and representatives of the political groups issued a statement on the occasion of International Roma Day. PiS MEP Elżbieta Rafalska spoke on behalf of the ECR Group.

On the occasion of International Roma Day, Elżbieta Rafalska extended her warmest wishes to the entire Roma community in Europe, especially the Polish Roma community, and recalled that her country is home to the most outstanding Roma poet, Papusza.

The MEP noted that many Roma live on the margins of society, in difficult conditions. “This problem is very complex, which is why we need meaningful social, educational, and cultural initiatives that will restore dignity and respect to this group,” stated the Polish politician. She added that integration must be thoughtful and cannot be blind. The PiS MEP also referred to the priceless treasure that is Romani culture, which consists of a vast musical heritage, a wealth of oral literature, and a rich tradition of dance. She noted that it is these elements that have allowed the Roma to preserve their cultural identity throughout their ten centuries of presence in Europe.
