Today, a debate took place at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, during which MEPs discussed the program of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union—which began on January 1—with Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre de Croo. PiS MEP Izabela Kloc spoke during the discussion.
Izabela Kloc noted that the presentation of the Belgian presidency’s priorities emphasized “a commitment to protecting democracy and strengthening the rule of law.” In this context, the PiS MEP drew attention to the fact that within a month of the formation of the government in Poland, there had been an illegal, forceful takeover of public media, the illegal dismissal of the national prosecutor, the unlawful arrest at the Presidential Palace of former interior ministers—who are now members of parliament. The Polish politician also referred to other unprecedented actions by ministers that have caused institutional chaos in the country. “The rule of law in Poland has ceased to function. This is accompanied by a disgusting manipulation of information in the mainstream European media,” — she stated with concern, adding that the use of force is portrayed in these media as “restoring order,” while defenders of the law are labeled “populists and nationalists.” “Unfortunately, in the European Union today, it’s not what you do that matters, but who does it,” she commented. The MEP also asked whether Prime Minister Donald Tusk “had received a license in Brussels to dismantle Poland.”
