In Brussels, during a meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety (ENVI) of the European Parliament, an exchange of views took place with Stéphan Séjourné, Executive Vice-President for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy, as part of an organized dialogue. Speaking on behalf of the ECR Group, PiS MEP Jacek Ozdoba took the floor during the discussion.
The PiS MEP addressed the issue of the defense industry, stating that in a situation where, just east of the European Union’s border, the Russian Federation has shifted its entire economy toward military production, any burden placed on the defense industry is “absolutely irrational.” “That is why I believe that, as Commissioner, you should address Parliament and introduce appropriate legislation to exempt the entire sector related to the defense industry from ETS2 fees,” he urged.
Jacek Ozdoba also mentioned the issue of the European Union’s competitiveness. He noted that while across the ocean “President Donald Trump is implementing a rational policy” that will accelerate economic growth, Europe is falling behind. “Just like China and India,” the PiS politician believes. According to Ozdoba, Europe is unfortunately “tightening the screws on itself” by pursuing an irrational climate policy. He emphasized that there are only three stable sources of energy: coal, natural gas, and nuclear power. He noted that some countries—due to their geographical location—cannot use solar or wind energy to their full potential. “We must therefore stabilize the grids with coal, gas, or nuclear power,” the politician noted. He added that not every country—including, for example, Poland—has nuclear power, but it does have coal reserves that “would be able to help all of Europe.” He also pointed out that modern technologies for eliminating or minimizing the negative effects of coal combustion “have been available for a long time.” The PiS MEP cited the example of Japan, which, although it lacks its own natural resources, also relies on coal technology.
