During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, a debate took place titled “Illegal spying by the Hungarian government on EU institutions and investigative bodies.” PiS MEP Joachim Brudziński spoke during the discussion.
Joachim Brudziński stated that it is the obvious duty of all member states and European Union agencies to combat all forms of fraud and irregularities related to the spending of EU funds. The MEP recalled that although the Law and Justice government had spent EU funds in a highly transparent manner, it had simultaneously been the target of relentless attacks. “In the same way, attempts are being made today in this Chamber to attack the Orbán government,” he noted. The former head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration in the PiS government agreed with the Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud, and Public Administration that praise should be given to the officials of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF).
“It is obvious that embezzlement and other crimes must be combated, but this applies to everyone,” he noted. The PiS MEP also called for representatives of the “left” to be treated with equal scrutiny when it comes to holding them accountable for scandals. “The Katargate scandal, the scandal involving former Commissioner Reynders—there has never been a debate in this Chamber about these irregularities, which are attributed to the governments of the so-called European left,” said the MEP. He pointed out that when Beata Szydło or Mateusz Morawiecki was prime minister in Poland, or Viktor Orbán is in Hungary, “such accusations are leveled as if the world were coming to an end.” “I don’t know if the Hungarians were eavesdropping on the European Parliament, but I do know that there is a lack of balance and decency in this House,” stated Joachim Brudziński.
