Today in Strasbourg, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, a debate took place titled “Jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition of judgments, and acceptance of official documents concerning a child’s origin, and the establishment of a European certificate of a child’s origin.” PiS MEP Kosma Złotowski spoke during the debate.
The PiS MEP noted that the scope of exclusive competences granted to member states is clearly defined in the treaties. “Respecting this division is fundamental to the smooth functioning of the European Union,” he emphasized.
Złotowski explained that one such area of exclusive competence is family policy, which cannot be shaped by Brussels. “There are no exceptions to this rule!” he emphasized.
The Polish politician pointed out that there are various national constitutional systems, which stem from the historical, legal, and political experiences of sovereign nations. “Any attempt to interfere with these systems and impose definitions of concepts such as parenthood, family, or marriage shows a lack of respect for the traditions and value systems of individual societies,” the MEP believes.
Kosma Złotowski emphasized that every member state has the right to decide who it recognizes as a parent, with all the legal consequences of that decision, without fear of any sanctions. “The Commission should not interfere in this process!” he urged.
