Today in Strasbourg, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, a debate took place on amendments to the Driving License Directive. PiS MEP Kosma Złotowski spoke during the discussion.
Kosma Złotowski said that everyone wants traveling across Europe by car or truck to be comfortable and safe. “We also want to effectively encourage young people to choose a career as a driver in road freight transport,” he added. The MEP noted that amending the Driving Licenses Directive is a good opportunity to achieve both of these goals.
At the same time, the Polish politician emphasized that this does not mean agreeing to impose new administrative burdens on drivers that could be discriminatory—for example, based on age—such as repeated and mandatory health checks. “Member States should—in accordance with the principle of subsidiarity—have the right to choose the tools they deem appropriate to assess driving ability. Excessive harmonization in this area will be costly and ineffective,” the MEP argued.
As he emphasized, for many people, a car is sometimes the only means of transportation that guarantees autonomy and independence. “Drivers are already bearing the enormous costs of the climate policy imposed by the European Union,” commented Złotowski, and he appealed not to impose further burdens on them.
