Today in Brussels, during a meeting of the Committee on Petitions (PETI), the coordinator of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR), Kosma Złotowski, speaking on a petition regarding the unilateral border controls introduced by Germany on the border with Poland, emphasized that such measures make life difficult for border residents and transport operators, violating the fundamental freedom of movement of people and goods within the Schengen Area, and noted that Polish citizens should not have to bear the consequences of Germany’s flawed migration policy.
“I thank the author of the petition for bringing this issue to light. Germany has unilaterally introduced border controls, which significantly complicate life for residents of border regions and for transport operators, who are forced to wait for many kilometers, including in Świecko. Today, the European Commission once again addressed this issue very cautiously, even though it disrupts the fundamental freedom of movement of people, goods, and services within the Schengen Area. “One can assume that if Poland had taken such actions, the reaction would have been quite different,” Złotowski emphasized.
The ECR coordinator also drew attention to the problem of Germany transferring illegal immigrants to the Polish side of the border. “For years, we have been pointing out that Germany’s ‘Willkommenspolitik’ is a mistake and a threat to security. We strongly oppose Polish citizens having to pay the price for these decisions. At this point, we owe our thanks to the Polish patriots who, out of a sense of civic duty, protect Poland’s borders and report alarming cases of illegal migrants being smuggled across,” he added.
“I believe the petition should remain open, especially since Germany’s unilateral border checks are planned to continue for at least several more months,” concluded Kosma Złotowski.
