Today in Strasbourg, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, a debate was held on the activities of the EP’s Committee on Petitions in 2024. ECR coordinator in the PETI Committee, PiS MEP Kosma Złotowski, spoke during the debate.
Kosma Złotowski explained that the Committee on Petitions operates differently from other parliamentary committees. “In the European Parliament, we have more than a dozen committees that deal with texts prepared by the European Commission. One committee, however, operates differently—namely, the Committee on Petitions. We work on documents submitted by citizens and forward them to the European Commission,” the MEP explained.
He also noted that in the case of petitions with broad scope, the Committee on Petitions drafts a resolution that may be adopted by the European Parliament. “This was the case, for example, during the previous legislative term, when Parliament adopted a resolution on clearing the Baltic Sea of wrecks and munitions from World War I and World War II,” he recalled. At the same time, Złotowski expressed disappointment with the European Commission’s attitude toward such initiatives. “And what, ladies and gentlemen? Nothing. The European Commission’s reaction is usually one of silence. A few officials show up, nod their heads, and that’s the end of it,” said the Polish politician. “This is how the European Commission treats its citizens,” he stated with disapproval.
The MEP called for lessons to be learned from this situation, particularly in the context of the vote of no confidence against the European Commission.
