In Strasbourg, during the ongoing plenary session of the European Parliament, PiS MEP Maciej Wąsik took the floor during the one-minute speeches on important political issues and criticized the European Commission’s initiative to organize a “roundtable" on the elections in Poland.
The PiS politician referred to remarks made a few days earlier by European Commission Vice-President Henna Virkkunen, who, in an interview with the German broadcaster “Deutsche Welle,” announced a “roundtable” on the elections in Poland. Wąsik emphasized that Poles view this statement as a threat of interference by the European Commission in the upcoming Polish presidential election and as preparation for a “Romanian-style” scenario. He explained that this statement is perceived as interference in Polish democracy and as giving the current Polish authorities the green light to undermine the results of democratic elections in the event a candidate who does not align with the current government’s agenda wins—which, according to the MEP, is becoming increasingly inevitable.
“I wanted to make it clear to Ms. Virkkunen and the European Commission that Poles do not want interference in Polish elections. Organizing anything over the heads of Poles regarding the elections will be treated as an attack on Polish democracy. The European Commission should, in accordance with the treaties, keep its hands off elections in member states,” the Polish MEP urged.
