During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, in the course of the debate on the report concerning the situation of fundamental rights in the European Union in 2024–2025, PiS MEP Maciej Wąsik took the floor, pointing to the political exploitation of the judiciary in Poland and calling for independent decisions on immunity cases.
In his speech, he emphasized that any discussion of fundamental rights cannot ignore the current situation in Poland. Wąsik accused Donald Tusk’s government of exploiting the prosecutor’s office and its influence within the judiciary to carry out politically motivated actions targeting the opposition.
The MEP also addressed the European Parliament’s decision to waive the immunities of certain members of the Polish delegation, calling on MEPs to engage in “deeper reflection” on such matters. He drew attention to the announcement of another procedure concerning the waiver of immunity for Mariusz Kamiński—currently a member of parliament and formerly the founder and first head of the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA).
Wąsik recalled the CBA’s activities from 2007 to 2009, noting that they were conducted legally and effectively. At the same time, he emphasized that despite the Polish parliament’s earlier decision in 2014 not to waive Kamiński’s immunity, attempts are now being made—nearly two decades later—to bring charges against him.
In conclusion, Maciej Wąsik appealed to MEPs to assess the situation independently and to make decisions based on their own convictions, rather than political divisions. As he emphasized, “decency demands it.”
