Today in Brussels, during a meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Development (DEVE), an exchange of views took place with State Secretary Tristan Azbej on the priorities of the Hungarian Presidency. PiS MEP Małgorzata Gosiewska spoke during the discussion.
Małgorzata Gosiewska noted that the number of people in need of humanitarian aid has more than doubled over the past five years. She presented the latest UN data, which indicates that nearly 300 million people in 72 countries will need humanitarian aid and protection in 2024. She reported that nearly 40,000 migrants arrived in Europe in the first quarter of this year alone. She explained that this means rising costs, but above all, a threat to our security. “Europe cannot solve global problems on its own, given its limited resources, the mounting crises around our borders, and the scale of humanitarian needs,” commented the Polish politician. She also emphasized that the European Union must call on other actors to become more involved.
In this regard, Małgorzata Gosiewska asked how the Hungarian presidency would work with others to address common challenges, such as illegal migration. “How will the presidency encourage better cooperation with developing countries on returns and readmission, as well as the fight against migrant smugglers and human traffickers?” the MEP asked.
The Polish politician also wanted to know how the Hungarian Presidency would encourage wealthy regional actors to increase their contributions to resolving humanitarian crises, particularly in Asia, the Middle East, and certain regions of Africa.
“How will the Hungarian presidency strengthen cooperation with like-minded partners, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan, to use resources more effectively?” she asked the Hungarian state secretary.
