PiS MEPs Ask the European Commission About the EU's Response to Countries Affected by Flooding

PiS MEPs Ask the European Commission About the EU's Response to Countries Affected by Flooding

PiS MEPs Marlena Maląg, Kosma Złotowski, and Piotr Müller submitted a question to the European Commission regarding the floods in Central and Eastern Europe, which resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen Europeans and left many others without their belongings.

The MEPs pointed out that efforts to rebuild the flooded areas and support those affected will be of utmost importance. They added that a discussion on preventive measures and safety standards should be equally important. They drew attention to the Polish government’s failures and its misleading of the public regarding the flood risk. “Our country—Poland—was shaken by the information presented at the last plenary session in Strasbourg regarding the monitoring of and warnings about this disaster, which had been ongoing since September 9, while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk assured the public on September 13, 2024, that the weather forecasts ‘are not overly alarming,’” the PiS MEPs stated.

In light of this, the MEPs asked which institutions the Crisis Response Coordination Center had cooperated with and at what level, as well as what form this cooperation took with countries at risk of flooding, particularly in Poland.

“When were the heads of EU institutions notified about the flood threat in Central and Eastern Europe?” the politicians asked. MEPs also wanted to know what measures the European Union intends to take to minimize the effects of such disasters.
